Half-time Breakdown
What songs will be performed at the halftime show?
This year’s highly anticipated halftime performance features Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, and Mary J. Blige sharing the stage. With five performers, the set will most likely be around 15 minutes long, and with the multiple hits these stars have generated over the years, it’s hard to predict which songs make the setlist and which won’t. With the limited time for the performance, these are my picks for the songs we will hear Sunday night:
Dr. Dre: “Still D.R.E” (feat. Snoop Dogg), “Nuthin but a ‘G’ Thang” (feat. Snoop Dogg), “California Love”
I think the opening of the performance will start with “Still D.R.E.” since the chords of this song are iconic in hip hop,and it’s been used in all of the commercials promoting the performance. The other songs are two of his most popular songs, which is ideal since Snoop Dogg is another headliner.
Snoop Dogg: “Gin & Juice,” “Drop It Like It’s Hot”
These are arguably his most iconic songs, and he has probably performed “Gin & Juice” more than any other song in his entire discography. Although he will be performing a few songs with Dr. Dre, these two are a definite must on the setlist. Our Snoop Dogg specialist Spencer Walsh assures us that “The Next Episode” with Dr. Dre will also be included in the medley… you can trust he’s a reliable source, but I wouldn’t.
Eminem: “Forgot About Dre,” “The Real Slim Shady,” “Lose Yourself,” “My Name Is”
The crowd might be the loudest once Eminem performs his greatest hits. A medley of these four songs along with a collaboration with Dr. Dre for “Forgot About Dre” will be a huge moment. There is absolutely no way that Eminem can perform at the Super Bowl without rapping these iconic songs, and if they are left off the list, fans will be extremely disappointed.
Mary J. Blige: “Family Affair,” “Real Love”
Being the only R&B artist set to perform, Mary J. Blige has to bring out her No. 1 song “Family Affair”, produced by Dr. Dre, and “Real Love” to bring more of an R&B flair to a heavily hip-hop-dominated performance.
Kendrick Lamar: “Humble,” “DNA”
There are several songs Lamar can perform, but “Humble” and “DNA” would be the obvious choices due to their enormous success and popularity. The energy from his performance will definitely get the crowd on their feet and extremely hyped for the second half of the game.
