Baseball Secures the Big North Division Title
The Old Tappan baseball team won the Big North National Division Championship after a 10-6 win over Bergenfield on Monday, May 15 at their home field.
The Golden Knights started off in a 6-2 deficit in the first inning. Senior pitchers Grant Maryott and Bryan Harden held their opponents in the following innings, allowing a string of vital hits including a double by senior Alex Kranzler in the sixth inning to give them the 10-6 lead that would win the game and secure the division title.
This win gives them an 8-1 record in the league, along with an overall record of 15-6 heading into the quarterfinals round of the Bergen County Tournament.
“This was a big win for us,” said senior Alex Gioffre. After closely losing the title last year, this was one of their main goals going into this season. Now, as the focus shifts onto the county and state tournaments, the team hopes that this momentum carries through for the rest of the year.
The team travels to Bergenfield on Wednesday for their last league game before returning home to face Glen Rock in the quarterfinals of the county tournament on Saturday.
