Boys Tennis Wins Sectional Championship for the First Time in Decades
The Old Tappan boys tennis team won the Group 2 sectional championship on Monday, June 5th beating Pascack Hills 3-2.
The match came down to the wire; the score was 2-2 with the deciding set coming down to a singles match. Junior Joseph Hwang lost the first set, and in the second set Pascack Hills junior Edward Shanoyan had six opportunities to finish Old Tappan off. But, Hwang persevered and pushed the final match to a third set. Hwang pounced and took the final set by a score of 6-4, and crowned the Golden Knights Champions after a four-hour long match.
Hwang said, “More than I was scared, I didn’t want to disappoint my teammates.” Throughout the match, the junior “took it point by point,” and “let my instinct take over,” he said.
The team faced off against Mendham in the North Group 2 championship on Wednesday, June 7th They lost 4-1, ending the team’s season.
