The cafe is a very important and sacred place for high schoolers at NVOT. When dying of hunger, students can be found begging for a trip to the cafe at least once per class. Students often even ask to use the restroom as an excuse to grab a quick snack from the lunch counter. From bagels with cream cheese to warm chocolate chip muffins, the cafe has something for everybody. So we surveyed The Lance’s staff to see what cafeteria items were most popular amongst the students.

For the first round of cafe foods, we gathered the most famous snacks from the lunch counter, pitting them against each other for the race towards victory. Our list made sure to represent the diverse menu the cafeteria has to offer, ranging from the crispy chicken tenders to the creamy mac and cheese.

From staff members we surveyed, we received these rankings back for the first round, with chicken poppers, cookies, cinnamon rolls, mac and cheese, bagels, fruit, candy, and normal fries beating their competitors. These results don’t come as a surprise, as we commonly see students walking around with these exact foods.

The second round got even more competitive, with only four being able to move on. Among the winners from the first round, cookies, cinnamon rolls, bagels, and normal fries seemed to have the most popularity among the surveyed staff members. It’s clear that students favor more simple snacks over heavier meals.

The third round showcased the two most sought-after lunch foods: cookies and normal fries. Students often purchase the warm, gooey cookies after school as a quick snack, indicating just how delicious they are. On the other hand, normal fries are definitely the most popular lunch option, as they are quick and easy meals combined with a mouthwatering flavor.

With the two most relished cafe foods fighting against each other for the top spot, only one can be given the title of the best cafeteria food. After a long battle, students showed their preference for salty over sweet, with french fries coming out victorious unscathed. French fries are considered a staple here and NVOT, and its title cannot be taken away from the savory snack.

Overall, The Lance seems to have a special place in their heart for the school’s fries. It’s no surprise as students are almost always carrying a plate of this delicious snack in the hallways. With the amount of variety in the cafeteria available to students, there’s always an option for everyone. If the school’s fries aren’t your favorite, give the crispy chicken poppers a taste! Who knows? You may end up finding your new go-to meal for the rest of your high school career.
