Hot Takes: Met Gala 2024

This year’s looks with a side of some surprise news
Hot+Takes%3A+Met+Gala+2024

Welcome back to everyone’s favorite part of The Lance: Hot Takes. Long time no see, we hope you have missed us as much as we have missed you!

It’s time to give you all our most unfiltered opinions about this year’s Met Gala! This year’s extravaganza was on May 6 and was co-chaired by Anna Wintour, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, and Zendaya. The Gala celebrates The Costume Institute’s new exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” and the event’s dress code was inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story named, “Garden of Time.”

But before we recap the biggest night in fashion, we have some absolutely heartbreaking news. Due to the gut-wrenching fact that she is nearing completion of high school, Liv will be leaving us. It’s ok to cry and stream “Never Grow Up” by Taylor Swift–this is a safe space for that. This heartbreaking news may have rocked your world, but don’t worry “Hot Takes” is in safe hands with Liv’s trusted protégé, Gracie, and our new gossip girl, Sofia. While we will all miss Liv, more unnecessary opinions from high schoolers are coming your way!

Favorites:

Tyla

One of our favorite looks of the night came very unexpectedly from upcoming artist, Tyla. Newly famous for her hit song Water, released in July 2023, we were all pretty excited to see she was attending the Met this year. Anyways let’s get on to her outfit that absolutely CRUSHED the theme of “Garden of Time.” Her bodycon sand dress by Balmain completely took the Met Gala to the next level. And the hourglass clutch is truly the cherry on top! The simple gold jewelry and extra sand stuck to her body really pulled the look together. She embodied the “Sands of Time.”

Zendaya

I know we all aren’t surprised by this one. We truly think Zendaya can do no wrong, ever. She not only gave the crowd a moment they would never forget, she delivered TWICE with not one but two Met Gala looks. Her first look was dark and twisted, capturing the “Gardens of Time” in a new light. The blue and green mermaid dress with metallic birds and berries attached gave the look a mysterious twisted feel. And let’s not ignore that DRAMATIC makeup look (okkkk, Z, we see you). Living up to the opportunity of being a co-chair of this year’s Met, Zendaya left the crowd shocked with her outfit change. She really gave the Met Gala the best of both worlds with her second look, having a bouquet of flowers literally sitting on her head. Safe to say everyone was shocked by this one. The black corset style gives the dress renaissance vibes, especially with the long train. The pop of color in the headpiece gives the outfit the perfect amount of elegance to its simplicity.

Disappointments:

Chris Hemsworth

Okay, if you are a co-chair at the Met Gala, you better show out. Chris Hemsworth, the Australian eye candy we all know and love, quite literally did the opposite. Respectfully (wait, actually disrespectfully-I don’t think Hemsworth will ever read our high school’s gossip section), it looks like he’s the best man in his brother’s wedding. Don’t even get me started on this supposed to be matching the theme. How? Where are the flowers? I mean at least his wife looked beautiful beside him, because boy was that man dragging the carpet’s fashion down.

Ed Sheeran

2024 was Ed Sheeran’s first-ever time at the Met Gala, and let’s hope it’s also the last time we see him on that carpet. There were so many wrongs, and Sheeran’s outfit choice was one of them. He partnered up with Stella McCartney and showed up with this very underwhelming powder blue suit. I’m sorry but he looks like he’s going to a prom in the 2000s (not a good look Ed). There are countless memes going on about Sheeran and how he looks like Troy Bolton from High School Musical 3, ouch.

Outfits We Disagreed On:

Lana Del Ray

Liv: Lana Del Ray is serving face, on theme, just headlined Coachella, on top of the world. In her first time back at the gala since 2018, Del Ray did not come to play. Her look came from an archival Alexander McQueen design from the house’s fall 2006 collection. There truly is not much to say about our queen, our lord, our savior, other than the fact that when I think of the Met Gala “Garden of Time” this is exactly what comes to mind.

Gracie: Don’t get me wrong, I love Lana Del Ray as much as the next girl, but this look just didn’t do it for me. This just looked like a cheap costume to me, and the colors are wayyy too bland and boring for my liking. I do like how she is holding a pop of color, but I just wish there was more. To me, this outfit looks like a dead plant (BTW Lana I still love you).

Kendall Jenner

Liv: Wow, just wow. There is so much to say, yet I am left speechless. Arguably the best she has ever looked. From the hair to the makeup, to the dress. Kendall Jenner just owned the Met Gala 2024. Jenner wore a 1999 archival Alexander McQueen for Givenchy that has never before been worn on a human. Talking to Vogue, Jenner said, “It’s been sleeping for the last 25 years. It’s literally a ‘sleeping beauty.’” I couldn’t have said it better myself, queen. It doesn’t surprise me that Bad Bunny and her ended up dancing the night away at the Met Gala after parties, he probably saw this dress and regretted the break up.

Gracie: I personally love the design of this dress and think Kendall looks absolutely stunning. Although I don’t think she quite captured the theme, “Gardens of Time.” When I look at Kendall’s outfit, I would assume that she is going to a red carpet event, not the Met Gala. I do like this look, but nothing about it particularly stood out to me, sorry Kenny.

General “What” Moments:

Lizzo

Lizzo…. Let’s just take a moment to try and comprehend this Met Gala fail. Her dress was designed by Victor Weinsanto and she was supposed to be capturing a flower in bloom. This look dropped our jaws wide open and the only thing that seemed to come out was “what is she wearing?” She almost looks like she is in physical pain. Did someone make sure she was ok after the walk down the carpet? We hope so. We are sorry, but it’s not Halloween, Lizzo! Why does she look like a wrapped tootsie-roll kids would get after trick-or-treating? After the carpet Lizzo said, “‘I’m tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet.’’ We feel bad, but at this point she is doing it to herself.

Kim Kardashian

One thing we can all expect Kim Kardashian to do is underdeliver on a red carpet (maybe a hot take, but that’s literally what we’re here for). Give her a casual Skims event, the woman will look drop-dead gorgeous. But, something about her on a gala red carpet somehow always leads us back to here: the “General ‘What’ Moments” section. With this look, there are not one, but two elephants in the room. Can you believe it? First, can she breathe? We struggle to breathe in our stuffy F204 classroom the second the temperature reaches above 60 degrees, so the fact that she is breathing in a corset that looks like it would fit only a newborn baby is mind blowing. Moving onnn, why is she wearing the rattiest cardigan we’ve ever seen? As quoted by Kardashian herself: “This is like the wildest night of my life in a garden, and I just ran out and grabbed my boyfriend’s sweater and threw it on. And had to get to work. My hair’s all messed up.” We’re just going to let that speak for itself.

We hope you enjoyed this year’s fashion almost as much as you enjoyed our hot takes.

It’s Liv here, and it’s been the privilege of my life providing my unfiltered opinions for our fans. Until next time, “Hot Takes”, I know you will do great things <3

XOXO,

Liv and Gracie
