Koda Augustyn, a sophomore at NVOT, has a passion for fashion that began in middle school. Known for her unique, eclectic style, Augustyn has been crafting her look since the 7th grade, inspired by the alternative fashion trends of 2020-2021. Over time, her fashion journey has evolved from alternative to what she calls “witchy academia.”
Augustyn draws inspiration from both her love of witchcraft and the intellectual vibe of academic fashion. She embraces layers, textures, and the mysterious allure of the occult. She is known for mixing sophisticated pieces with a touch of quirkiness. Likewise, she loves long skirts, cashmere shirts, and luxurious fur coats—especially during the cold winter months.
Augustyn is 100% committed to sustainability in her wardrobe choices. Most of her pieces are thrifted, reflecting her commitment to reusing and repurposing fashion while avoiding the hefty price tags of brand-new fur coats. “Thrifted fashion is not only affordable, but allows me to find unique, vintage treasures,” Augustyn says.
What sets Augustyn apart from others is her ability to layer clothing in unexpected ways, creating standout looks that defy trends. “I love to buy clothing with the thought of, ‘How will I layer this? Can I mix this with what I already own?’” she said. This creative approach to styling ensures that her outfits are as one-of-a-kind as she is.
Augustyn champions the beauty of thrifting and vintage finds. Her favorite fashion trend is sourcing high-quality, sustainable pieces from thrift stores, including Goodwill, Plato’s Closet, and consignment shops. “I look for fabrics like cotton, wool, linen, cashmere, and leather,” she says. “While I’d love to support small brands, these fabrics can get expensive, so I search for them in thrift stores instead.”
While Augustyn enjoys expressing herself through fashion, she’s not shy about sharing her least favorite trend—hoodies, leggings, and Uggs. “It’s okay for comfort, but it lacks personality,” she admits. “There’s no flavor to the outfit, and I can’t get to know you through your clothes when everyone’s wearing the same thing.”
For anyone looking to develop their own unique style, Augustyn has some simple advice: “Check out your local thrift stores! You never know what hidden gems you might find.” Whether you’re looking for classic pieces or bold statement items, thrifting is a sustainable and budget-friendly way to build a wardrobe that’s truly your own.
Augustyn’s creative, witchy academia look, her dedication to thrifting, and her thoughtful approach to layering have earned her the title of NVOT’s Fashion Student of the Month.
