Spreading the Spirit of Giving
Volunteens collects food to help the hungry
The holiday season is the time of year to give back. With the fast-approaching holidays coming up, the spirit of giving is spreading. After collecting a record-breaking $2,026 from the bag-a-lunch fundraiser, the Volunteens dove straight into their next activity of the year: the Thanksgiving Can Drive.
The Thanksgiving Can Drive is an annual event that runs throughout November and early December. Club members are encouraged to bring in non-perishable foods, such as canned or dried goods. The items brought in by club members are donated to the Norwood Food Pantry that will use the donations to give back to the local community and help those in need.
Club advisor Steve Ahad reached out to club members stating, “There are a lot of people who are not as fortunate as we are, who will be spending Thanksgiving not only alone, but also homeless and hungry,” urging them to lend a hand in their communities.
Sophomore Martina Torello-Viera, a club member, stated, “I’m glad that along with many other students in the club, I was able to donate to people less fortunate and give them a meal for the holidays that they otherwise might not have had.”
The deadline for the drive is December 6, just in time for the holidays. The final donations will be transported to the Norwood Food Pantry, where they will be used to prepare meals.
