SOPE screens documentaries related to environmental awareness
What do movies and recycling have to do with one another? According to Mr. Steve Ahad, advisor of SOPE, the answer is everything.
SOPE, which stands for “Save Our Planet Earth,” is NVOT’s environmental club. Not only do club members participate in cleaning public parks, but also they take initiative inside the walls of the school. Within the school, SOPE club members regularly visit classrooms and empty the recycling bins.
The club’s recent idea, “Doc Night,” is a movie night that presents interesting documentaries that focus on environmental issues. Already, the club has watched “WALL-E,” although it is not a documentary, which addresses the huge impact that the environment will have on the future – a theme prevalent in the SOPE club. In addition, they also plan to screen “The Ivory Game,” a documentary covering the issue of elephant endangerment in Africa. Ahad hopes that this movie night will bring members together since the club does not have many occasions to regularly meet.
SOPE has made many changes to its club in the past few months, intending to mitigate previous issues and, overall, improve the club. Although “the Northern Valley student is swamped with involvement,” Ahad hopes it will not hinder the club’s newly defined initiative.
