Upcoming Movies to Be Hyped For: The Threequel
The third and final installment
In the past few weeks, there have been some mind blowing movie announcements and trailers that must be talked about. Knowing everyone here watched all the bangers from last year’s “Upcoming Movies 2 Be Hyped For,” it is time for the 2023 edition to close the trilogy.
Oppenheimer
This new Christopher Nolan film centers around Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb during World War II. Oppenheimer has the most stacked cast on this list, and just to name a few we got: Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Gary Oldman, Robert Downey Jr., Rami Malek, Casey Afleck–it just keeps going. The historical fiction will certainly fall in line with Nolan’s iconic filmography, along with Interstellar, The Dark Knight Trilogy, and Inception. And we all know Nolan uses minimal CGI (more of a practical effects type of guy)—so what the people want to know is will the climactic nuclear explosion be a real stunt? Wait and watch on July 21.
Creed III
With the first two films of the series being intense and electrifying boxing classics, based on the universe from the famous Rocky series, Creed III cannot disappoint. Michael B. Jordan, who plays Adonis Creed, says that the upcoming movie will also focus on the pain outside the boxing ring. With the epic posters (to your right) and breakout actor Jonathan Majors as the looming new antagonist, it is safe to say that another banger ensues.
Cocaine Bear
Just the bizarre name of this film already has me hooked, but the background behind its title completely reeled me in: A narco plane crashes in the hills, along with $2 million worth of pure cocaine. The first to stumble upon the stash, however, is a massive black bear, who devours all 34 kilograms of the cocaine. Based on a true story, this upcoming Elizabeth Banks movie is set to be an ambitious thriller about a 500-pound apex predator’s coke-fueled rampage.
Mad Max: The Wasteland
A new Mad Max film is long overdue, even for the fifth installment of the series. Mad Max Fury Road was released in 2015, now recognized (by me) as one of the best action movies of all time. Wasteland, the upcoming installment of the post-apocalyptic, dystopian sci-fi will serve as the prequel to Fury Road. We will most
likely become familiar with how the civilization collapsed and how Max ended up in Immortan Joe’s fortress. Be prepared for another visual marvel with a whole lot of explosions and futuristic car chases.
Beau Is Afraid
You already know your boy had to throw an A24 movie on here. Coming from masterful horror director of Hereditary and Midsommar, director Ari Aster is about to drop another masterpiece with Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix as the lead actor. With the intensity and weirdness demonstrated in the trailer, it seems as Aster has almost created his own subgenre of indie mind-bending horror. No one knows what to expect from the ominous and non-revealing trailer, but that is the best part of walking into the movie theater with a bag of popcorn: the unknown.
