Throughout this past decade, we’ve watched as a plethora of fashion trends have come and gone. Highlighted here are the top 10 biggest fashion trends in the 2010s, including some that are following us into the new decade and others that we are leaving behind.

  • 10. Designer belts (Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Ferragamo): In the past two years, not only has designer clothing trended, but the widely spread comeback of belts also brought in various designer brands’ different renditions of belts.

  • 9. Suede/satin material clothing: This trend rose to popularity in the past 2-3 years, especially trending in 2019. First trending during the 80s, satin was considered a luxury material because of its texture and sheen. Both suede and satin are frequently used to make jackets, shirts, dresses, skirts, shoes, and so many more clothing pieces.

  • 8. Statement pants: Whether it’s plaid, gingham, animal print, or palazzo pants, wearing pants as a statement piece has become a widely popular trend this past decade. In the past five years, jeans have slowly been pushed aside for printed pants.

  • 7. Cropped clothes/midriff showing: Ever since gaining popularity in the 60s, crop tops have always been popular among teenagers. However, this past decade crop tops are everywhere in all different variations. The trend of cropped sweatshirts and sweaters has especially grown in the past 3-4 years.

  • 6. “VSCO girl”: This is the most recent trend that blew up in 2019. As a photo editing and sharing app: VSCO’s rise in popularity has ushered in a new effortless and girl style. Some “VSCO girl” staples include oversized t-shirts, graphic tees, plaid skirts, scrunchies, shell necklaces, and other 90s trends that have come back in style this past decade.

  • 5. Streetwear: Brands like Supreme, BAPE, Off-White, and others introduced casual clothing as a trend. Streetwear gained its popularity during the 90s and its popularity continues to grow throughout the 21st century. California skate culture and NYC’s hip hop fashion mesh together to create this widely known trend.

  • 4. Ath-leisure: From the launch of Lululemon, Alo yoga, Fabletics, and many more athletic apparel stores, athleisure has become increasingly popular during the past five years. Athleisure is simply wearing athletic apparel with non-athletic apparel.

  • 3. Platform sneakers: With the return of 90s fashion trends in the 21st century, Spice Girls-esque platform sneakers are frequently worn and well-liked by teenagers and young adults. This year, platform sneakers are a staple in every girl’s closet.

  • 2. Animal print: Animal print was massively popular in the early 2000s and died down during the early and mid-2010s. However, around 2-3 years ago, leopard, snakeskin, and other animal print clothing became on-trend once again. Now, you can’t walk 10 feet in a shopping mall without noticing the striking animal printed mannequins.

  • 1. Denim: Whether it’s high rise and low rise jeans, denim skirts, or denim jackets, denim has blown up this past decade. This 90s trend returned during the mid 2010s, bringing with it all styles of denim. In the past 2-3 years, denim print has especially gained popularity, and are everywhere from phone cases to handbags.
