A State-ment Victory
Girls soccer wins state sectionals for the first time
Girls soccer brought home the program’s first-ever state sectional win in a shoot-out at River Dell high school on November 5, 2022. Heading into the game, the girls were the underdog, ranked fifth seed against second seed River Dell. This was a game of strong defense, with neither team’s offense being able to successfully score a goal.
After the regulation time and double overtime score of 0-0, the girls entered a penalty kick shoot-out. Senior Mackenzie Ward saved 3 of River Dell’s PKs, proving vital to the team’s win. Freshman Nina Caunedo and seniors Natalie Carril and Alexa Tripodi each scored their penalty kick, pushing the team to victory. Tripodi, who scored the final and winning penalty kick, said “it was great to make history [her] senior year, and [she] hopes to start a path for the rest of the teams in upcoming years.”
The girls continue on to compete in the state group tournament on Tuesday, November 8 against West Morris.
