The ‘60s was a period of massive youth-led culture, as well as the spread of mainstream political and cultural movements. Amidst the societal upheaval that the country underwent, this decade introduced the first class of NVOT, the class of 1967, with a welcoming, “As you read the first issue of our school newspaper, you will realize that Northern Valley at Old Tappan is an active, busy school. We take pride in the achievements we have recorded in the past and fully anticipate even greater accomplishments this year.”

  • The newspaper informed readers about sports scores and events within the Northern Valley community. The issue primarily used black and white photographs, but also included the first version of The Lance logo and colorless cartoons and illustrations. Photo Courtesy of The Lance Archives

  • Furthermore, the issue cost 15 cents, the first time the newspaper was sold for money. How blessed life would be if everything was still that cheap. Photo Courtesy of The Lance Archives

  • At the end of the issue were advertisements from local businesses, providing their addresses to promote them. Perhaps reading advertisements is a lot less tedious than waiting to click the dreaded “skip ad” button on a YouTube screen. Photo Courtesy of The Lance Archives
