The print issues of the 1970s continued to feature sports achievements, with added focus on extracurricular activities; for instance, new clubs–like the Ski Club– were created.

One ad even said, “Elton John does not get his hair cut at Mr. Crimper Haircutters. But that doesn’t mean
you can’t!”

The trends of a time period say a lot about a generation, with teenagers of the 1970s enjoying roller-skating rinks and cassette tapes on boomboxes: a stark contrast to modern TikTok trends or drinking from Stanley cups. In contrast to the rise of hip-hop music, the era’s vibrant music scene, and high-energy social hubs, today’s trends are heavily driven by social media marketing, with greater impact of influencer culture. Also, while there was use of graphics and illustrations, especially in advertisements, there were more photographs of people. These photographs captured life at NVOT, including marching band triumphs and student rehearsals, which is something the newspaper continues to highlight today.

  • Furthermore, the issue cost 15 cents, the first time the newspaper was sold for money. How blessed life would be if everything was still that cheap.
