On March 9, 2026, NVOT kicked off their spring sports season with nine teams holding practices and tryouts. After a few weeks of games, scrimmages, and early statistics, each team is beginning to take shape and show what they’re capable of this season. From strong returning players to new talent stepping up, there are many possibilities to come in the next few months. As the season picks up, here is a brief overview of how each team is starting their season off.
Girls Lacrosse: The Girls Lacrosse team ended their season last year with a 12-4 record and moved up a league to compete this year. With the team changing hands to head coach Maia Levenshus, there is a new beginning for them to prove what they have. The team started their season off 0-3, picking up losses against Holy Angels, River Dell, and Ramsey. Stony Brook commit goalie Jaley Mazzetti said, “This season is about showing who we are. We’re coming in ready to work, ready to compete, and ready to earn everything we get.” They will play Roxbury on Wednesday, April 15.
Boys Lacrosse: The boys lacrosse team has started off their season strong with a 4-1 record, picking up wins against Saddle Brook, Nutley, Paramus, and Westwood. Junior Nick Blanchard said, “The team looks strong this year, and we’re excited to see what we can accomplish.” They will face River Dell on Saturday, April 11.
Baseball: Coming back from a season with an 18-8 and semi-final appearances in both the Bergen County Tournament and Sectionals, baseball is starting their season off strong with wins against Bergenfield on March 30 and April 1. Columbia commit Selden Kolkebeck threw 16K’s to shut the Bergenfield Bears out on March 30. Junior outfielder Derek Antigua said, “this year we’re coming for it all–whether it’s a state, county, or league title.” Senior catcher Anthony Onnembo said, “We’ve got a great group of guys that are hungry to make noise late in the season.” Their record stands at 5-0, and their next game is on Friday, April 10 against Ramapo.
Softball: The Golden Knights start their season with a 3-3 record, picking up wins against Northern Highlands, Wayne Valley, and Teanack. Sophomore Grace McManus hit four home runs in the team’s scrimmages, and four in the first six games. McManus said, “We have a lot of young talent. Our growth will show in big ways as we make our way into the season. I’m excited to have a fun year with this group of girls and be an underdog in Bergen county.” They will play against Pascack Valley on Friday, April 10.
Boys Golf: With a short season, boys golf is looking to beat their record of 5-5 from last year. They competed in the Garden State Cup on Wednesday, April 1 where Sophomore Khanho Lee placed 8th. Lee said, “I think this is one of the strongest teams we’ve had in a while, especially with five returning varsity players. Our goal is to compete for a trophy as a team, and if we stay consistent, I think we have a real shot.” The team will face Bergenfield on Monday, April 20.
Girls Golf: The Girls Golf team started their season with two wins against Ridgewood and a win against Dwight Englewood, making their starting record 3-0. Sophomore Romy Kim says, “Our team is working hard to win state sectionals this year.” The team will face Academy of the Holy Angels on April 21.
Track: After a winter season where the boys were recognized as Bergen County Team of the Year, the boys’ track team has high hopes for their spring season. Senior Brendan McNamara said, “The boys have worked hard all winter, and we’re ready to win some spring titles.” The girls team had a strong winter season as well, and senior captain Angie Kelly said, “I’m excited to see what the girls can accomplish in the spring after all our hard work in the winter.” Both teams look to compete in their first county meet of the season (Bergen County Relays) on April 17-18.
Boys Tennis: The boys tennis team has a packed first week back. The team had their first games against Demarest, Pascack Valley, and Bergen Tech, where they picked up three losses. 1st singles player and captain Sami Gurunathan said this season he’s looking forward to “learning, growing, and spending time with the team.” Their next match is against Ramapo on Friday, April 10.
Boys Volleyball: The Boys Volleyball team has started their season off with a 3-1 record, with wins against Vernon, Indian Hills, and Don Bosco Prep. Junior Carter Monllor said, “My team and I are really looking forward to this season. This is the most promising team we’ve had since the start of the program and there’s an exciting energy every time the team is together. If we play like I know we can, we’ll have a really successful season and bring some big wins to the program.”
